About Yadgir
Yadgiri, often referred to as “Yadavagiri” by locals, has a rich historical and cultural heritage. It was once the capital of the Yadava Kingdom and played a significant role in the region’s history. The district has been ruled by several powerful dynasties, including the Satavahanas, Chalukyas of Badami, Rashtrakutas, and various Sultanates such as the Adil Shahis and Nizam Shahis.
In 1504, Yadgiri (formerly part of Gulbarga) became a permanent part of the Adil Shahi Kingdom of Bijapur. It later came under Mughal rule in 1657 after an invasion by Mir Jumla. The region was later governed by the Asaf Jahi (Nizam) Dynasty of Hyderabad from 1724 to 1948. In 1863, when the Nizam administration reorganized districts, Surpur (Shorapur) was made the district headquarters, with nine taluks, including Gulbarga. By 1873, Gulbarga was designated as a separate district with seven taluks.
Following the reorganization of states in 1956, Gulbarga became part of Karnataka, and Yadgiri remained one of its taluks. The Bahmani rulers played a crucial role in the region’s architectural and cultural development, constructing palaces, mosques, markets, and other public structures in Gulbarga. The city boasts a significant number of mosques and dargahs, reflecting its historical importance.
