About Kolar
Kolar, historically known as Kolahala, Kuvalala, and Kolala, was referred to as Kolahalapura during the medieval period. The name “Kolahalapura” translates to “violent city” in Kannada, indicating its role as a battleground between the Chalukyas from the north and the Cholas from the south. The Cholas ruled Kolar from 1004 AD until 1116 AD when Vishnuvardhana of the Hoysala dynasty reclaimed Gangavadi from them. To mark his victory, he constructed the renowned Chennakesava Temple in Belur.
Kolar is home to several historically significant temples. The Kolaramma Temple, dedicated to Goddess Shakti, was originally built in the Dravidian Vimana style in the 2nd century. It was later renovated by Rajendra Chola I in the 10th century and further restored by the Vijayanagara rulers in the 15th century. Another important religious site is the Someshwara Temple, a fine example of Vijayanagara architecture from the 14th century.
The early history of Kolar was extensively documented by Fred Goodwill, a superintendent of the Wesleyan Tamil Mission in Bangalore and Kolar Gold Fields. His research has been featured in various historical journals. Kolar, older than Bangalore, has a history dating back to the 2nd century. It served as the capital of the Western Ganga dynasty, which ruled over regions including Mysore, Coimbatore, Salem, and Travancore. In the 13th century, Tamil scholar Bhavanandi composed Nannool, a significant work on Tamil grammar.
With its deep historical roots, architectural heritage, and contributions to literature, Kolar remains an important part of Karnataka’s cultural legacy.
