About Gadag
Established as a district on August 24, 1997, Gadag holds a rich legacy in art, literature, culture, spirituality, and industry. Over the years, it has gained recognition as a popular tourist destination, attracting nature lovers with its lush greenery. The Malaprabha River flows along its northern border, while the Tungabhadra River marks the southern boundary. Additionally, the Bennehalla stream merges with the Malaprabha near Ron. The region primarily consists of black soil, though red soil mixed with sand is also found in some areas. Gadag experiences a moderate climate, characterized by pleasant and healthy weather conditions. The temperature can reach a maximum of 42°C during April and May, while the lowest recorded temperature drops to around 16°C in certain months.
Located in the state of Karnataka, Gadag serves as the administrative headquarters of Gadag district. The city shares its governance with its twin city, Betageri. Gadag is closely associated with the renowned poet Narayanappa, popularly known as Kumaravyasa, who composed Karnata Bharata Kathamanjari—a Kannada rendition of the Mahabharata—at the Veera Narayana temple, his place of devotion. The city is also home to significant historical and religious sites, including the temples of Veera Narayana and Trikuteshwara.
Gadag is also known for its contributions to music, particularly through the blind singer Pandit Ganayogi Panchakshari Gawayi, whose music school, Veereshwara Punyashrama, remains a notable institution. The Tontadarya Matha, associated with the Veerashaiva sect of Hinduism, plays a crucial role in promoting education and literature in the region.
Gadag’s rich cultural and historical significance continues to make it a unique and vibrant part of Karnataka.
